Weekend Update

February 6, 2021

Sending out a weekend update because stuff is going to happen on Monday and it might be good to give those of you so inclined to participate the time to get ready.

So, here’s what’s happening Monday:

HB82 – Single-Family Housing Modifications is up for another hearing in committee at 3:40..  The link for the bill will take you to the 2nd Substitute version, though neither the first or second substitutes were adopted in last week’s committee meeting.  There has been extensive discussion with Rep. Ward about the language of the bill, and I anticipate there will be either another substitute version or a bunch of amendments before Monday’s committee meeting, so stay tuned.

SB144 – Billboard Restriction Amendments, the other wacky billboard bill (not SB61 which was heard in committee last week), is up for hearing also at 3:40.  This bill puts a lot (more!) restrictions on what local governments can do about moving, permitting, and prohibiting billboards, and also what property owners can and can’t do!  Really something.

HB171 – Agricultural Land Use Regulation is also up for hearing in the same committee right after the billboard bill, but it does not seem to have any real concerns, at least none I’ve heard so far.

Also on Monday, the Commission on Housing Affordability will convene virtually at noon to discuss the recently released SB164 – Utah Housing Affordability Amendments.  Might be worth a listen to see what the comments are about this bill.

And here’s a news story about proposed funding for transportation projects being discussed at the legislature.  Mostly it’s about double-tracking Frontrunner and transportation in Little Cottonwood Canyon, both big issues.
