Overview
Planning Apprenticeship Position
Job Summary: The planning apprenticeship will assist the planning division in preparing reports, performing research, reviewing development plans, and making professional suggestions to the Division regarding the land use and development planning needs of the City. A planning apprentice may attend public meetings, make presentations to staff, decision makers, and the public. The apprenticeship position is a time limited position intended to develop the skill set of the apprentice so they can advance their career while providing planning needs to the city.
Responsibilities
- Assembling planning related data for the purpose of establishing base line information, monitoring trends, determining the effectiveness of regulations, and measuring metrics established in master plans.
- Performing basic development reviews under the supervision of an experienced professional planner.
- Creating and providing presentations to city staff, the planning commission, historic landmark commission, and potentially the city council.
- Creating maps and datasets to analyze growth, land use, and population trends.
- Field research and observation related to land use policies and regulations.
- Processing basic land use applications.
- Researching land use records to determine the land use and planning history of the property.
Qualifications
Apprentice Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license may be required.
- Good time management, critical, and interpersonal skills may be required.
- Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal skills, and troubleshooting abilities.
- A growth mindset and passion for learning.
Desired qualifications
- Enrolled in an urban planning program at the university level with one year or less of education remaining on an undergraduate degree.
- Experience with demographic research, US Census data, and other data sources.
- Experience creating maps, shapefiles, and merging data sources in ArcMap.
- Completed courses or experience with land use law.
