Overview:

The Assistant Planner plays a dual role within the Planning Department, responsible for coordinating the City’s code enforcement program and assisting with current planning tasks.  This is an excellent opportunity for early-career professionals to gain broad experience in municipal planning, land use review, and community development initiatives.

Essential Job Functions:

Coordinate all aspects of code enforcement including complaint intake, research, site inspections, case management, and compliance coordination with the City Prosecutor and other departments.

Review residential and basic commercial building permits, sign applications, and other development applications for compliance with City Code.

Serve as project manager for various land use applications, such as conditional use permits, short-term rentals, accessory dwelling units, lot line adjustments, minor subdivisions, legal nonconforming determinations, etc.

Prepare staff reports and present recommendations to the Administrative Committee and, on occasion, the Planning Commission and City Council.

Act as the primary public contact for zoning and land use inquiries via phone, email, and in-person at City Hall.

Conduct field studies, investigations, and surveys.

Collect and analyze statistical data and prepare maps, charts, and other visual materials in support of planning projects.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·        Knowledge of planning principles, zoning regulations, and enforcement procedures

·        Familiarity with research and data analysis techniques

·        Proficient in Microsoft Office and general office software; experience with GIS or permitting software is a plus

·        Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·        Strong customer service and public interaction abilities

·        Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously with attention to detail and deadlines

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in urban planning or a closely related field

Minimum of one year of experience in municipal planning, private planning, or design

Must have a valid Utah Driver’s License

Successfully pass a background check, a driving record check, and a pre-employment drug test
