Water and land use are inextricably linked, but to what extent are planners in Utah linking water planning to their land use plans and ordinances? Join the State Planning Coordinator, the Division of Water Resources, the Division of Drinking Water, and the Division of Water Quality to learn about the State Water Plan, regional conservation goals, drinking water capacity planning and plan review requirements, storm water updates, and water infrastructure. EXPLORING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN UTAH’S LANDSCAPES & WELLBEING

Utah’s diverse mosaic of landscapes provide a dynamic backdrop for it’s fast-growing economy. Land use decisions are complicated because of the relationship between Utah’s lands and waters and the wellbeing and objectives of stakeholders. This presentation will draw upon recent study findings that highlight values and attitudes about landscapes and waterscapes as well as measures of personal and community wellbeing across the state. It is hoped that the discussion will explore opportunities for collaboration between Utah’s planners and those who carry out USU’s land grant mission through research and community engagement.

STRATEGIES AND TACTICS FOR ONGOING PUBLIC COMMUNICATION PROGRAMS – PART 1 & 2

Join us for two panel sessions packed with professional communication expertise. The first session will focus on the purpose of a strategic communication plan and effective local government communication practices, with local practitioners and the president of the UT PIO Association sharing regional best practices and case studies from their own experience. The second session will focus on communication campaigns to engage the community for specific purposes, with two professional communication consultants and a UDOT regional communication director discussing the building blocks of effective public engagement.
PRESERVING COMMUNITY CHARACTER

This session will take a look back before trying to project into the future. It will address the nebulous issue of “community character” and ask, “what is that” and “how do you figure that out”? We all talk about our quality of life and how it is changing, but can we do anything about it? We will explore techniques to determine what is important to your community and worth trying to preserve. It will also suggest tools that could be used for some of the common issues. Heber City in Wasatch County will be used as an example.

This session will use two projects in Grand County, Utah as case studies to demonstrate how comprehensive engagement and mission-driven design can help in successfully navigating the politics of small town planning. The same underpinning principles apply to working with a university as they do with an institution. We will also touch on sustainable design, living building standards, and integrating programming into master planning. Each project will be presented followed by questions and answers with a panel and a short activity where participants will be able to practice techniques described in the presentations.
