Candace Schaible is a water conservation coordinator with the Utah Division of Water Resources (DWRe). Candace works with cities as they adopt water-efficient landscape ordinances that qualify for participation in the state’s landscape incentive program. She also develops resources and tools to assist homeowners through the process. She has a background in horticulture, landscape design, landscape water use, and program planning and development. Candace is a certified qualified water efficient landscaper (QWEL) and program instructor, serves as the treasurer of the Utah Water Conservation Forum (UWCF), and has served on the UWCF Board of Directors since 2014. Prior to joining the DWRe, Candace worked as a USU Extension Assistant Professor, focusing on education, program development, and scholarship in the areas of horticulture and landscape water conservation in Southern Utah.

2024 Spring Conference, May 9, 2024 10:40 amAs Utah experiences increasing strain on our water resources from climate change and growth, water wise landscapes - or Localscapes - have become a hot topic. Water wise landscapes reduce the amount of water a landscape needs by 50% or more, beautify our communities, create pollinator habitat, and help us better integrate water and land use planning. In recent years, Utah has made important progress towards water wise landscape transformation by scaling-up turf replacement incentives and by adopting local water efficient landscaping codes for new development and redevelopment. In this session, speakers will share funding opportunities, design resources, lessons learned, barriers, and other best practices for cities, counties and water providers interested in advancing water wise landscaping in their own communities. .
