Session Summary:
Are you curious to know what affordable housing strategies cities are finding to be successful? Join us to hear about the state of the practice in 10 Utah cities, based on current research findings from the University of Utah’s Metropolitan Research Center (MRC). APA Utah will frame the conversation in a planning context as multiple organizations in Utah join the MRC to offer perspectives on current, critical issues related to affordable housing.
Speaker Bios:
Reid Ewing, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor of City and Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah, Distinguished Chair for Resilient Places, and Associate Editor of the top ranked Cities journal. He directs the Metropolitan Research Center at the U. He holds master’s degrees in Engineering and City Planning from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Transportation Systems from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A recent citation analysis found that Ewing, with more than 26,000 citations, is the 6th most highly cited among 1,100 planning academic planners in North America. His recent article on COVID-19 and urban density, published in the Journal of the American Planning Association, already has more than 12,000 views on the JAPA website.
Ivis García, Ph. D., is an Assistant Professor in City and Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah. In Utah, she has completed various research studies in partnership with the Road Home, Assist Inc., and NeighborWorks. Before completing her Ph.D., she worked for the Nathalie P. Voorhees Center where she collaborated with the City of Chicago Housing Trust Fund, the Chicago Rebab Network and Housing Committees of the Latino Policy Forum and the Puerto Rican Agenda. She also has worked with housing developers to complete a Latino Housing Plan in the West Side of Chicago. Dr. García was a researcher for the National Low-Income Housing Coalition in Washington, D.C., and it is currently part of their Disaster Housing Coalition working in Puerto Rico.
