This session explores the direct and indirect impacts of public transit on reducing vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and greenhouse gas emissions. Using multilevel structural equation modeling and data from 31 diverse U.S. regions, we reveal the indirect impacts of transit investments beyond ridership through changes in the built environment, and how it encourages active mode choices and foster location efficiency.
