I just ended a 17 year stint in Ogden City as the Deputy Director and Director (now loving it in Riverdale City). I was blessed with many cool opportunities! One of my favorite projects that I was able to initiate and develop was turning a terribly seedy and crime ridden motel (flop house, really) into amazing public space named The Dumke Arts Plaza. Besides the obvious need for redevelopment, the concept behind the project included creating an outdoor space, accessible by all, that showcased local art in unique ways. We received a significant grant from the Dumke Family for both capital costs and ongoing program, which is conducted by the Weber State Dept. of Visual Art & Design. The plaza’s design, inspired by the region’s dynamic landscape, has the flexibility to support many types of art, from large-scale installations to small performances, and includes an LED screen for displaying film and video art. An elevated platform known as the plinth provides more space for arts programming, as well as a new perspective on the plaza and its surroundings. The Plaza is a welcoming public space, with interactive play elements, unique lighting, benches, and water-wise landscaping. A major feature of the Dumke Arts Plaza is the Beacon, a new sculpture that extends over 25th Street, inviting visitors to explore the plaza.
