Last week, Nicole sent an email notice mentioning that the first AICP Examination study session will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 9:30 AM online. Several Utah-APA Chapter members had questions. I will respond to the various questions received so far. However, if you have other questions, please email me and I will do my best to provide a timely response.
1. Who are the session instructors? They will be Bruce Parker, Ph.D., AICP, Alyssa Gamble, AICP, and Ali Avery, AICP.
2. What is the nature of the AICP examination? The exam is 170 multiple-choice questions, with 150 to be graded. The exam is 3.5 hours and will test your understanding of laws, statutes, principles, policies, plan development, analysis, planning theory, the luminaries of US planning, and other matters. This is a national test designed to test your knowledge of US-based planning. While some topics may have a Utah basis, this is a national examination with a national focus and content.
3. If you cannot make all the sessions, each session will be recorded and transcribed.
4. All materials will be provided in a Google file folder, accessible to all session attendees.
5. All session attendees are expected to participate fully and to make meaningful contributions to each preparation session. No slacking is allowed.
6. At the first session, we will discuss and decide the best study schedule for all participants. We may post all available study materials in a Google file that instructors expect exam candidates to read and understand. We will discuss this further on Saturday, including an outline of exam topics to be covered over the next few months and various resources available. If you have other questions, please email me at pds@utahplanning.com
