Last week marked the culmination of our much-anticipated spring conference held in Cedar City, Utah. The event was a resounding success, featuring a lineup of impactful speakers and thought-provoking panels that left attendees enriched and inspired.

One of the standout moments was when SUU’s President Benson took the stage to recount the rich history of Southern Utah University, highlighting how the institution’s roots are deeply intertwined with the collaborative efforts of the local community. Her narrative underscored the power of unity and collective action in shaping our communities.

Other noteworthy sessions were led by Ben and Arinn from Walking Distance, who delved into strategies for defusing conflicts and championing the voices of the marginalized. Their insights provided valuable guidance on fostering inclusivity and empathy in our communities.

Steve Waldrip brought his expertise to the forefront by shedding light on the pressing issue of housing shortages. His illuminating discourse explored potential solutions and pathways forward in addressing this critical challenge.

We experienced an exceptional airport tour led by Clint Harper, followed by a guided walking exploration of the SUU campus arranged by our colleagues at MHTN. However, it was the softball game and the networking tour of the Utah Shakespeare Festival’s facilities that truly stood out as the pinnacle moments of the conference for numerous participants.

Wilf Sommerkorn offered valuable perspectives on the legislative season, offering attendees a comprehensive overview of key developments and implications for planners in the coming year.

A particularly enlightening panel discussion centered around the inclusion of the water element in the general plan, emphasizing the importance of sustainable water management practices in urban planning. Stay tuned for our follow up workshop on this issue.

Furthermore, ULCT (Utah League of Cities and Towns) facilitated a deep dive into legislative bills pertinent to planners, equipping attendees with the knowledge needed to navigate evolving policy landscapes effectively.

For those unable to attend these sessions, fret not! We are excited to announce that recordings of the Legislative Update, The ULCT Workshop, and the Water Element Panel will soon be made available on our website.

As we reflect on the success of our spring conference, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our speakers, panelists, and attendees for their contributions in making this event a memorable and enriching experience. We also appreciate the support of our members and guest for helping make this year’s conference memorable.

Don’t forget to save the date for the upcoming APA UT Fall Conference in Provo, UT, scheduled for October 10-11, 2024. This is an event you definitely won’t want to miss!-Nicole Masson
