APA Utah is seeking donations of paper or electronic copies of documents related to the history of city planning in Utah. Archived documents will be scanned and preserved for reference and research. APA Utah will share these documents through the Chapter website.
The APA Utah Chapter Archive includes chapter membership and leadership records; Executive Committee meeting records, such as agendas and minutes; chapter newsletters and conference programs. However, as a volunteer organization whose roots began in 1957, there are—understandably—many “holes” in our primitive collection that we hope past and present members will “fill” by donating city planning documents and related ephemera to APA Utah.
For example, do you have a collection of printed Utah planning newsletters collecting dust on a bookshelf or tucked away in a cabinet drawer? Call me! We are primarily looking for missing newsletters that were printed and mailed to members throughout Utah from 1957 to 2005. Utah Planner newsletters originally distributed as PDF documents in 2006 and 2007 are also wanted.
Printed or PDF copies of past chapter conference programs would also be a welcomed donation. And if anyone has a printed program from the first planning conference held in Utah, well, that would be akin to catching the “Golden Snitch.”
It is almost hard to imagine that we used to meter and mail printed newsletters and conference programs, right? Proving once again that Bob Dylan was—and continues to be—right, “The Times They Are A-Changin” indeed.
Other archival materials that may be appropriate are photographs, biographies, and obituaries of former city planners who worked in Utah. Documents related to planning projects of historical significance may also be appropriate. Essentially, if you have any planning-related documents that may be worth donating to the APA Utah Chapter Archive, please contact Michael Maloy at (435) 496-0431 or mmaloy@herriman.org.
