Water Efficiency Standards Ordinances: Four rapidly growing Utah cities have taken action to address water supply challenges through water-efficiency standards—helping to build stable and drought resilient communities.
Category: Ordinance / Regulation / Legislation
Award: High Achievement
Nominated: Cynthia Bee
Summary: The cities of Herriman, South Jordan, West Jordan, and Bluffdale are high-growth communities where rapid development is creating new pressures on water supply. In partnership with their wholesale water provider, Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, each of these cities has recently enacted comprehensive water efficiency standards for all new construction, including single-family residential. These standards help ensure that new growth is following sustainable water practices and are a successful example of greater integration of land use planning and water use planning. The adopted standards are based on effective water-efficient landscaping practices seen throughout the western United States.
