Salt Lake City Reimagines Nature: A commitment to equity and building stewardship shaped the adaptive, multi-pronged engagement approach and yielded an increase in response rates from underrepresented communities.
Category: Public Engagement
Award: High Achievement
Nominated: Nancy Monteith
Summary: Salt Lake City initiated the planning process for Reimagine Nature, a Public Lands master plan, just as the pandemic changed how we engaged with the public. To adapt, Public Lands utilized new advertisement methods and partnered with the University of Utah to employ a variety of digital and in-person techniques to reach underrepresented communities. Response rates were monitored to inform where to direct outreach. Despite a small budget, this engagement campaign unlike any seen in the city’s history, has been highly successful regarding respondent diversity, response rate, and how citizens play a strong role in crafting the plan.
